Yes it’s illegal, but maybe not for much longer. The North Carolina General Assembly is currently working on the passing of House Bill 1380, which proposes the legalization of the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
Nick Mackey, a former North Carolina representative for District 99, held a meeting in early March at UNCC in hopes that the bill would be passed. This would make North Carolina the fourteenth state to legalize the use of medical marijuana. North Carolina would be joining Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Washington.
“I think people should stop looking at it as such a bad thing, if they did it could be used as a beneficial resource for countless things,” said a student who asked to remain anonymous.
There is a population of North Carolina citizens who are speaking out strongly against the passing of House Bill 1380.
Sophomore Noah Lieberman said, “We don’t want to promote the growing of marijuana, it could possibly lead to negative things such as gangs and gang violence. We can’t trust that the marijuana grown will be used by just prescribed users, recreational use is too much of a risk.”
Of course there would be strict limitations on the approved conditions for the use of the cannabis, an alternative name for marijuana. The most commonly approved illnesses for use of marijuana are cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and insomnia.
