The men’s basketball season is officially over and senior players have begun to reflect on their time at East.

After the big win against Providence High on January 23rd, the boys were ranked first place in the conference. They went on to win seven conference games and losing only three. With only one game remaining, senior players reflect on the year’s challenges and embrace the possible ones of the future.

“This year’s greatest obstacle was overcoming the lack of height and learning to play strong together,” said head coach Jason Grube.

Grube has been coaching our Eagles for eleven years. He has experienced the feelings of losing and the relief of winning with 2008’s State Championship title. In the future he predicts that his players will become productive members of society.

“Playing for Grube not only bettered me as a basketball player, but I also became a better man with responsibilities and commitment,” said senior Brycen Hampton.

After the second win against rival Myers Park, the possibility of becoming state champions drew closer. One goal was accomplished, but beating the Bulldogs was now first priority.

“Both wins were exciting, but we still had to stay focused and control our destiny to continue to be on top in the conference,” said Hampton.

The lost against Butler was hard to digest. The boys played hard and lost by only one point.
Despite the setbacks, the boys embrace possibilities of college basketball and other sports. Basketball was more than a game to the players. They learned tough life lessons of discipline and hard work.

“Basketball taught me that it’s more than a game. Its life as far as managing my time and priorities,” said senior Jeremy Ingram who plans to stick with basketball through college.

Like Ingram, senior Tiant-Zion McCoy look towards a future with college ball. “I want the team to be remembered as good basketball players but as role models as well,” said McCoy.

After a hard lost against Ardrey Kell and Providence the boys became third in the conference. The win against Independence was another addition to their list of wins.  Still, the boys lost to Providence and ended their season when they lost to Hopewell by 5 on February 22.

Even though their season ended sooner than they expected the senior boys can at least feel that they made their mark on East.
