Soccer team overcome flaws

“Hopefully, not to jinx it or anything but this season we’re really coming together as a team.” said senior Jordan Arey.

Not only is the men’s soccer team having a great year as teammates it is also having a great year on the field, with a record of 7-7-1.

The soccer team has always been legendary, with accomplishments including three Conference Championships, two State Semi-Final appearances, two All-Conference players, an All-Regional and an All-Observer player in the past five years.

“They’re a pretty unified, hardworking team. They’re progressing rapidly in skills and tasks, and their potential is limitless,” said head coach Mark Guercio.

Guercio graduated from East Meck in 1992. He coached at Brevard High School before coming back home to the Eagles in 2000. In 2001 he took over as Junior Varsity head coach, and added Varsity in 2008. Guercio is known for his grueling practices,

“They’re tough,” said Arey , “he’s really focused on us becoming a better team.”

¨Guercio is really direct. He puts a lot of thought in his game plans.¨ added Senior, Montrell Morgan.

Most of the team agreed that they need to work on communication on the field, citing their lack of talking during games.

As the only captain this year, Morgan feels the added responsibility of acting as the team’s second coach.

He agrees that the team’s weak point is communication, but at the games, his scream can be heard, no matter the location. But the other teammates are also leaders, even if unintentionally.

“I look up to everybody. In order to be on varsity, I have to be able to do what they’re doing,” said freshman Robert Fairman of the JV team. Fairman, who plays center midfield, enjoys being on the soccer team and all of the friends he has made.

“We have the potential to be really good, we just have to play steady,” said Morgan.

The team hopes to stay competitive and focused on set goals and hopefully place top five in conference.

With their strong history and determined players, the men’s soccer team has a promising future.

The Mens soccer program will be a group of hard working young men. Jackson arey, And Asher Bernstien will be key in getting the youngers to play well. chad reed will also be a big factor in the goal. As for the Jv, we will see what the effort of two a day training and coach brown’s hard work will bring.
